My friends wanted to make a bonfire of my books last time I moved.

I've got a very strong attachment to my books as well, even though quite a lot of them are novels I wouldnt read today. Still I find it impossible to throw one away. At a few occasions I've managed to give books away, when I felt that someone else really would have more benefit from them, but normally I just cant.
Ebooks isnt my thing at all though. I dont like to read long texts on screens. Fanfic is just about what I can manage.
I dont think you should worry about books being material attachments - in many ways they arent. At least in my mind. And a library? Great idea for people, but less good idea for the books. People dont treat librarybooks well, and you dont want your books to get folded corners and pencilwriting all through them. Keep them instead and let kind people borrow them. People that treat them with respect.

I'm at an interesting crossroads myself, now that I've got an eBook reader.

People seem to lend books! I am in a distinct minority. I don't lend books. Or give them to people.

Library donation is a good idea; you might check around with some local schools, too.
