Well 'i' refers to the square root of -1, which is what is called an 'imaginary number' (because all real numbers multiplied together are positive) and the other symbol stands for PI, which is not a rational number (because all rational numbers have finite or repeating decimal expansion, whereas PIs goes on forever and is non-repeating).
