I should probably share this story with you, Beqi.
I work as a server full-time, and there are occasionally times when we do our very best to interpret credit card receipts but just do NOT know what to put. I had that very problem last shift I worked. The credit card slip was for $55. The tip was completely illegible, but it LOOKED closest to $10. It most definitely did NOT look like $20. However, with the math done, the guest had written in $75. I believe this was a math error, and my manager was insistent I use the $10 option. I have also been a restaurant manager, and I always told my staff to use the bottom line total as their cue for the questionable times. In this instance, I'm sure they expected the total deducted from their debit card to be $75, but in the name of honesty and what is best for the guest, I used $10 and the total on the slip became $65 when it was run through our system.
Fair? ~shrugs~

But it does occasionally happen when servers are just guessing, and they make an honest judgment call, hoping they guessed correctly.
