I think that's one reason why a lot of people are upset by the reaction. Harry Connick Jr said something along the lines of if it happened in America then there'd be no more show.

But it didn't happen in America, so to decry the skit, the performers, the show, hell even the whole country as racist is going a bit too far. Like you said, different contexts.
