No, I was right. What's more, not only will there not be an election (or, well, there will be an election among the members of the European Council, i.e. the heads of government of the member states), but the European Parliament won't even have the authority to confirm or reject the result, as they do have for the President of the Commission (although until the recent debate about whether to accept Barroso for a second term, that confirmation has mostly been a formality).


elect the leader at least. And even then I would not be happy with that. This is one of the reasons the Australians rejected the referendum to become a Republic. The President would have been elected by the Senate not by the public. People want to elect leaders directly.
