I traveled to India for a wedding about 8 years ago, and the Hindus (Hare Krishnas, actually) in the area were all vegetarians (along with other diet restrictions). No meat for 9 days. The Muslim locals ate meat, but most Westerners who come to that area belong to the Hare Krishna religion, so they wouldn't sell me any.
After the wedding, I took a plane from Calcutta to Delhi, the stewardess was offering veg or non-veg breakfast. I signed up for non-veg (yay!) and got the spiciest scrambled eggs ever. To me, they were inedible. Finally, I had 5 days or so in Delhi where I could indulge myself.
