That was not my intent.
View original postSince I have no reason to question or doubt your initial claim to desire nothing more than honest debate without rancor, let's view my reply as constructive criticism to help you better achieve your stated goal.
View original post"Indulge" was such a choice. According to Merriam-Webster, indulge implies excessive compliance and weakness in gratifying another's or one's own desires. Making use of that word is obviously editorial in nature. Concede would have been a more neutral choice, had you wished to be so.
So I should say that I do not, and probably will never, reference an actual dictionary when I choose my words. A dictionary is good for a clinical definition, but can sometimes miss the (regional?) flavor of words. Concede is a good word, but it holds a flavor of thought that I'm not sure I agree with.
View original post"with other mental health issues we step in and stop their behavior for their own good"
View original postReally? How so? Force-fed medication? Let me clue you in on something. Very few adults receive involuntary commitment for mental health issues. Treatment plans are voluntary in all but the most dangerous cases.
I am aware that very few adults receive involuntary treatment. I am also aware that the loved ones of adults have stepped in to stop their destructive behavior. An example would be the friend I referenced earlier who thought that the only way to fix the situation he perceived was to set his room on fire. His parents stepped in to stop his behavior (for both his and their own good).
View original post"and we do not play along"
View original postAnother good one. Supporting the wishes of the transgender person is "playing along." Honest debate without rancor?
I came up with an honest phrase for my honest feeling. Let's remember that society is being forced to change to meet them.
View original postHere's a big one. "Interfere." So let me get this straight. When I of my own free will sought treatment for my lifelong depression, and again of my own free will accepted the medication the doctor prescribed, he was "interfering" with my mental health issue? My late wife's treatment for bipolar disorder was also interference? Perhaps intervene would have been a better choice? Ah but only if you didn't want your slant to show.
For both you and your wife, the doctor was intervening by providing treatment. At the same time, interference would be them actively stopping you from doing something destructive. If you had gotten to a point in your depression when you would have attempted a destructive action, and someone stopped you, wouldn't that be interference? The two words are very close to one another, however interference has the flavor of someone stopping you from something that you really wanted (something specific). Intervene has a different flavor (at least to me). It has more of going after the root issue.
View original postLastly equating doing what makes you happy over the course of your life with a hedonistic pursuit of immediate happiness is a poor argument at best and disingenuous at worst.
I understand what you are saying, but I would disagree. Doing something (short term or long term) to satisfy an emotional response is (in my opinion) a foolish endeavor. An example would be marriage. Over the years, through good times and bad, the emotions are going to grow strong and grow week. When that marriage lasts, it's not because their marriage is based on emotion, it's based on their conscious and forthright decision.
