Trump supporters are not the base of the party they are fringe. His support has stalled at 35% and many of them are not Republicans. Everyone knows that his supporters have drunk the Kool-aid and don't care if he is lying they are just looking for someone to Pat them on the head and tell he can make it better. The attacks are designed to keep his support from growing because despite what the talking heads are saying if he does not change his trajectory he won't win. If Trump does not win a majority he won't win in the convention.
