When he said thank France for gift of Freedom, I thought he just meant the statue of liberty itself, which I think is a nice gift for what it is, though its general relevance to the matter at hand I wasn't overly sure on.
Otherwise yeah, the French didn't help USA's independence fight much, and only did as much as they did in order to hurt Britain. There have been plenty of such politics in the past, which don't tend to carry forward an idea of debt owed.
While I am one who thinks the US came in later in both World Wars than they should have, (especially the 2nd - the first while horrific was based around different belligerents, no real 'right' or 'wrong' side like can generally be said for WW2), if (and it's a big if) between France and USA one county owed the other, I thought it would be France owing USA....
