It doesn't necessarily follow that education is getting worse, though.

View original postIf you look at the most popular candidates in each party's primary, you see that they are ignoring logic to make populist arguments that appeal to peoples' emotions. When more conventional candidates try to point out logical flaws, they are berated as being defeatist insiders or worse, as "intellectuals". People are starting to not know how much they don't know, which is another step down the road to Idiocracy.
If anything, it's arguably a sign that education has improved, to the point where far more people feel qualified to proclaim opinions, even on subjects that they're completely clueless on.
One of the most depressing statistics is the 43% of Republicans who believe Obama is a Muslim - what that really means is that nearly half of the population (I rather suspect Democrats would be as bad on other topics) feels that their opinion trumps those pesky little things called facts.
View original postI am supplementing my children's education at home with real, substantive education. We read books on science and history, I get out the Atlas to show maps and teach geography and my 6-year-old is learning Latin. I explained the accusative case and she never made a mistake once. We added the genitive case a few days later and are moving slowly but with marked progress.
Latin at 6? Impressive. Is she already bilingual in English and Russian?
I don't understand education priorities

It amazes me how many parents don't seem to think they have a role in thier children's education

But it has. College is now teaching what high school should have.

To some extent - not entirely - it's just that the ideas of general knowledge were different.

I do agree with you in large parts - but I don't see the full picture as bleakly. Maybe wrongly.
