It also ignores both the documented record and the body constitutionally charged with funding as well as raising a military (hint: Start with the mandate all revenue bills originate in the US House, NOT White House.) No one stupid enough to lay down arms yet invite war could have been elected governor of a major state, much less president; had he been that incompetent neither we nor, most likely, he would have survived the following four years of historys largest deadliest war. Further, the primary "evidence" used to call FDR a warmonger in the FIRST place is that he spent much of the '30s pushing for rearmament only to be "shot down" by congressional isolationists who insisted the SOLE means of deterring war was to be visibly unable to resist it.
Correct, it is not a matter of opinion he slashed military budgets to the bone: It is a matter of falsehood and misrepresenting the basis of revenue bills, appropriations bills, military bills and ALL bills. Even if the budgets he submitted to the House (essentially by proxy, since neither he nor any president can technically author them) HAD denied ANY military funding, the House could and would have amended those budgets to supply all funding it deemed appropriate. So how many times DID the House INCREASE a pre-war FDR budgets military funding? And how many times did isolationists and fiscal hawks DECREASE that military funding?
The fact that FDR was bound and determined to provoke a war and embrace it with only half-assed measures only makes him that much more reprehensible.
Now that IS a matter of opinion, and founded on a falsehood misstated as "fact," as the record shows. Isolationists cannot grandstand about "merchants of death" for a decade then blame disarmament on others--particularly not isolationists who decide military and ALL appropriations.
