It's a victim of its own success, honestly - it kept expanding both in size and in scope, but the bigger and more comprehensive it gets, the more the voters have the feeling of being disenfranchised, or ignored at least.

The euro is an ambitious project, and worked far better than the pessimists would have us believe at the start. I still think it'll come out of this, not unscathed perhaps, but alive.
