That said, there's something to be said for lame-duck presidents using their near-immunity (what are you going to do, not reelect him?) to take unpopular measures that are nevertheless useful for the country. Like, oh say, push through TPP and the European FTA, reform Medicare, reform the tax system, narrow the deficit, start tort reform, end gerry-mandering and I could go on for a while, but I somehow doubt he's going to make any meaningful contribution to any of those things...
