That's an extraordinary, terrible situation. The family did precisely the right thing, and now they are being fucked over for it.

What was the "right thing?" Expecting the magic insurance fairy to solve all their problems for them? Tossing a pittance of money at an insurance company and then expect it to foot a 900,000 dollar bill? What on earth could they have possibly done to expect such a service? And, for that matter, why does their universal health care system stop at the border? It's not like they moved away. They are still paying the same taxes in Canada that everyone else does.
