Their is a strong anti-industrial undertone in Europe and to a lesser extent in the US. It has been around for a long time as you can tell by reading Tolkien. Maybe "want to hear" was not the most accurate wording so much as it fits your world view. If you already believed humans were destroying the planet then this slides right into that world view and people are always eager to accept ideas that support their world view.
