He was a deserter. He wandered off the base trying to "walk to India" and at least six soldiers were killed because of him. They should have exchanged his corpse for 5 Taliban corpses. I despise and loathe Obama as I have never despised and loathed an American President, but even for him I find this to be the most clearly reprehensible act that he has undertaken since assuming office. I characterize it as treason to hand over five high-ranking enemy leaders during a time of war in exchange for one deserter who held the rank of private (and never should have been requalified as a sergeant).
