There are some amazing attractions near Westminster tube (Parliament, Big Ben, the London Eye, great parks, etc. etc.) and Soho has loads of amazing shops and whatnot. Chelsea/Knightsbridge would be too far out I think.

UPDATE: I booked Strand Palace Hotel (Westminster), just 0.4 miles or a 9 min walk away from Leicester Square, and I'm pretty happy about it - $300 for two nights.
