For reading on my iPad, I use the Overdrive app (it allows me to dl library books), on the lowest screen brightness, and I use the "night" setting (black background with light font). I need to be able to read without a light at night.

Oh. That's no good. The "night" setting might just be the app I'm using, but others might have it. *NM*

As I understand it, the Kindle Fire is a normal tablet - no Kindle-like eyestrain-less screen

The Nexus 7 is definitely the best bang for the buck. Maybe try to fix the problems you're having?

I've had the Nexus 7 for a while, and find it difficult to fault.

I've had it on standby with minimal use for 1 days, and the battery is 1/2 gone.
