The only foreign concept if you haven't studied a Romance language is the rampant use of the subjunctive, which Americans can't seem to use properly on those rare occasions it is called for in English, and which is only used in the conditional in Russian. Even so, the subjunctive isn't that hard once you start using it. Have fun!

I have no idea what a subjunctive is (a brief glimpse at wikipedia didn't help), and I hope I won't need to! 98% of learning a language is straight up memorization - of words and phrases. Then once you know the correct expression, you infer a lot of the grammatical rules. At least that's how I'd prefer to do it.
