It should be self-evident that if you are going to use deadly force to kill someone and claim self-defense, you need to prove that your life was actually in danger. Otherwise you are just killing indiscriminately and hoping for just such an outcome as Zimmerman has been afforded by his trial. A scraped head, a bloody nose, and injured pride are not grounds for justifiable homicide in any way, shape or form. Zimmerman admits to shooting Martin, of this at least there is no doubt. The problem comes with the series of assumptions that Zimmerman makes and the lies he concocts in order to avoid prosecution which place the proof on the deceased rather than the killer to show that events did not transpire as reported. As the old saying goes, "Dead men tell no tales"...

You must be in a situation where a reasonable person might BELIEVE that they were in danger of loss of life or serious injury. I guarantee you that someone being on top of you either hitting you or bouncing your head on the the ground (if you want to not believe concrete) on a dark rainy night while you yell for help and nobody comes qualifies.
