GZ, after following Trayvon Martin in his car: "Hey, I'm from the neighborhood watch, are you lost?"
Trayvon: "No, I'm going back to my dad's house up the street here."
GZ: "Who is your father?"
Trayvon: "Tracy Martin. His house is right there."
GZ: "Hang on here just a second...."
GZ picks up his mobile, dials Tracy Martin's number: "Hello Mr. Martin? I have a young man here who says he's your son."
Tracy Martin: "Yes, my son went to the store and should be back soon. Is he in trouble?"
GZ: "No, I didn't recognize him and you know we've had some break-ins recently."
Tracy: "Thanks for your concern, but if you could send him home I'd appreciate it."
GZ to Trayvon: "Sorry for the hassle. Bye!"
The problem comes from having a mentality that says that owning and using a gun is the solution, rather than direct engagement with the person. Simply asking Martin what he's doing would have completely avoided a situation that resulted in a teenager's unnecessary death.
