The last day of the battle was certainly the day the South died. After reading Shelby Foote's trilogy of the Civil War, I don't really think the South ever had a chance, because there wasn't any real likelihood of European intervention in the war, primarily because Russia was fervently pro-Union and France wouldn't move without Russia, and England wasn't going to move without France. Still, it was clear to everyone after Gettysburg that the South could not win the war.
