Most people forget that DADT is not what banned gays from the military and instead was designed to protect them from being forced to commit perjury and was meant as way for them to serve without fear of criminal prosecution.

It's easy to look at history and draw a line, saying "Oh, that was needed so that actual gay marriage could happen now."
And DOMA was definitely NOT created as a way to help gay couples gain acceptance.
