Edit- Totally betraying how little I pay attention to sports, I just realized that Jason Collins is in the NBA, not NFL. Blame the fact that I've been playing a lot of Madden on XBox lately, I guess. Anyway, too lazy to edit, and my basic point still stands, so, whatever.
I don't follow sports news much, but I know there's been a couple news items in the last few months. There was that team who condoned some anti-gay remarks, and some player that said that there were definitely some gay players in the NFL, and maybe a third thing?
On the one hand, it's not a big deal in the sense that we need to discuss it endlessly, but I think it's as relevant as any "human interest" story.
There wasn't a single (out) gay man in the entire NFL- an organization filled with role models, watched by a large swath of our country's population, and pretty heavily stereotyped as being only for real, macho, men? I don't think it's unnotable (woo double negatives!) to spend 30 seconds reading about one of them coming out.
That said, I've already forgotten his name and team.
