To put this in perspective, adding to Issac's points - Edit 1

To put this in perspective, what would become the international space station was projected to cost about 15 billion late 1980s dollars.

The beginning of the assembly of the ISS began in 1988 and the first part was launched in orbit 10 years later in 1998. The ISS didn't begin holding people until 2000.

In today's terms the ISS has cost about 150 billion dollars, with a little over 70 billion being the US cost.

To put it in perspective each person day of the ISS cost about 7.5 million dollars once you average it all out.

A space trip to mars would be astronomically more expensive than the low earth orbit bullshit we do with the ISS.
