If you feel that all the hard work you do here will absolutely get you nowhere, then maybe that hard work will improve your life there. That's pretty much why anyone ventures anywhere away from what they've always known. Sure, there are other reasons for going, like adventure or glory, but that's the main one.
Oh, and to answer your question: I would not go as a settler.
