View original postThe only food news website that I regularly follow is foodnavigator.com. More pro-industry, less sensationalistic and with actual journalism.
I was too lazy to find a site I liked; I fully admit it. It didn't bother me only because I've read quite a bit more on this than just that little snippet.
View original postWhat's your definition of "processed food", by the way? The act of peeling (raw material preparation) and grating (size reduction) are both processes. Hence, grated carrot is a processed food just as much as some nitrate-filled canned food. How much processing is too much for you? Are you also opposed to stuff like using CMC (a cellulose derivative, or as that site would say, wood pulp) as a thickening agent?
I define processed food at you do, but overly processed food is where we go wrong, imo. I mean, I'm a hard ass about it, because I don't even buy shredded carrots (more expensive and barely easier), but I still get that they are technically processed. And yes, I would rather not have anything added to my food that didn't start out looking like food. I am NOT claiming all of that is bad for me, just that I would prefer not to eat what I can't be sure of.
View original postI admit I'm leery about dipping oranges in toxins. I wonder how much the sales of oranges would really drop if the fruits looked a bit shabbier. Perhaps we should just stop eating them altogether and switch to more endemic fruits that don't need to be shipped.
I actually think this is a solid idea, but it won't happen. Fruit is just one of the many examples of products that travel long distances (requiring additives to keep them nice, high carbon output, cheap labor, etc) but probably shouldn't. However, I fully admit that I think that getting fresh fruit into people's hands is probably the better of the two options.
View original postSorry if I seem confrontational, I'm too blind for my own text. And also really, really tired but can't go to sleep yet. Which also explains my rambling.
You have to be much worse than that to piss me off. Gonna try?
View original postMmh? What's up with the * NM*?
No idea. Mine does that too.

I wouldn't expect orange zest to compose a large portion of one's diet

Well, a lot of those fall more in the cultural things/irrational food frights category...
