As noted in response to Tom, I doubt they CAN, not without conceding America remains at least as much the dominant East Asian force as they do, a completely untenable position for them. Even if they wanted to (which, against the historical background, would be tantamount to reinitiating the Open Door Policy,) a generation of demonizing US imperialism and glorifying Chinese nationalism may mean the Chinese PEOPLE would not tolerate that.
