There's a bunch of countries where only names on the official lists are allowed - that does go too far. But I approve of the countries that give parents free choice within certain limits, with absurd or offensive names being rejected. Although of course there's a lot of grey areas there - that big fuss in Sweden about the girl named Metallica several years back comes to mind, it's not manifestly offensive or absurd, merely seems inappropriate and stupid of the parents to put a label on their daughter that way from day one. Not sure how that case ended, actually...
