Both societally and governmentally, we haven't devoted nearly enough resources to addressing the issues of mental health. I do support gun control, but I think that addresses a symptom of the problem and not its core.
I think, though this is entirely anecdotal, that we've become much more disconnected as a society. It is rare for people to strike up conversations on public transit—uncommon here in the South, practically unheard of in the Norheast—because we're all plugged into our phones and iPods. Facebook lets us keep friendships on a superficial level, like a life support for acquaintances that would otherwise fade with time, but how meaningful are online interactions, really?
