I rarely drink, but drink liquor on those occasions (usually scotch on ice or screwdrivers; Jim Beam is also good) and learned that lesson very young. One could argue smoothness is ultimately the goal of blends, averting a choice between rotgut distilled last month or spending a kings ransom for something older than the drinker. Mixing them yields something that stays down without resorting to a loan officer. Of course, blending naturally dilutes all components' unique qualities to some degree (again, much of the point,) so there is a tradeoff between taste and texture. Of note for those of us with a taste for blends is that all components of those with a stated age must be at least that old; some very old blends are almost like drinking (80 Proof) flavored water.

I cannot speak to Dewars versus other scotch though, because I think I have only (possibly) had it once, and (if so) recall nothing distinctive about it.
