are we talking "career" or "job" here? i got laid off from teaching at-risk middle school kids and puttered around for two months or so before i started delivering pizzas to pay the bills. then i got an IT job with a dial-up ISP which downsized us two weeks before the 9/11 attacks, but i kept the pizza job during that time. so even though i was technically unemployed (i.e. -- collecting unemployment), i was still working and making enough money to get by.
