i'm sure you're closer to coal country than me, but the fact is that these workers had little reason to believe their livelihoods were at stake.

They probably missed us telling them hundreds of times that if Obama got re-elected their livelihoods were at stake.

Seriously? I'm a good 100 miles from coal country here and I focus on my turf but do you have any idea how much damn money was burned screaming exactly that through a megaphone. News article aside, no right-leaning coal worker was surprised by this except maybe in rapidity of action. I sure as hell wouldn't invest in it right now.

this was, quite literally, a political point judging from what i have read of the people who were laid off this week.

Well according to the journalist it was, and it probably was in part, but Coal isn't a good investment right now and from what I know most of the people in the coal industry who were not doing well decided to hang on till after the election. If Obama won, fold shop, if Romney won, re-assess. Obama won, it was the logical thing to do and the sooner the better, but yeah I'm assuming the timing was partially political. Remember POV though, this Coal Baron probably believes to his core that he tried as hard as he could to save his workers and Obama destroyed that and he wants to shake his fist at the 'evil bastard'. I think assuming he and some others sat down and said "Hmm... we need to layoff workers today to convince people Obama hates coal and jobs" is a bit over the top, people don't think like that, more "No point putting this off any longer guys, we're screwed, we lose money everyday we delay and I for one want those Green bastards to feel a little of the kick in the teeth they just gave us while they're celebrating the destruction of our country." etc.

Like I said, getting rid of fossil fuels may be necessary and the LEft's route of doing so may even be right and best, but it still has collateral damage and I think it's a bit unfair to demonize someone for doing something that makes sense... how long should he have waited? Would you be complaining if a union dropped a bunch of people right after a contract negotiation fell through because one of the negotiators who was pro-union got sacked for a Ayn Rand fan? It would be common sense, "Well, we're fucked, might as well get it over with now".
