It is a genric term. The navy is full of such terms, and of course the Marines use them as well.
A single bed can be called a rack or it could be four high beds on an old crew ship. The only time I have seen military personal forced to sleep side by side is in filed sleeping in half shelters (which is a tent where two guys both carry half of tent). Even then most guys just used there tent half as ground cover and slept on top. Not sure if they even use them anymore.

Actually I have seen a configuration on board to allow my sleeping space where a portion of the torpedo room that is normally used to hold torpedoes is instead converted into about 24 racks each side by side with no separation. They don't make those guys share their racks though as it is unpleasant enough sleeping in that situation and while in someone else's workspace as well (so it's not very quiet at all).

As I understand it, there are very good reasons why they don't let women on submarines.
