a self slected group has less value as a study random thoughts Send a noteboard - 08/10/2012 02:28:47 PM
When I decided to try Chantix pills to stop smoking my Dr recommended I do why the pills were still working. The joke was that when you have products like the early results well be better than the long term results because the people who sought it out first were motivated to do so and the people who come along later tend to be less motivated and so they would be less successful. Yes birth control is always an effort, that is a major factor in the point I was making, and women who have already shown a willingness to make that effort are more likely to be successful than the population in general since it will contain a significant number of women who will not make the effort.

To be a valid study it needs to compare the results of two similar groups and this study fails to do that. If it had only accepted half the people who applied and tracked the results of that half vs the people receiving the free birth control then it would have been a valid, for women who cannot afford birth control but it still would not be valid for the population as whole. The study claims that when economics is not a factor woman chose implants more but does that finding hold true for the women who can afford it? Are implants the method of choice for the more affluent women? I don’t know the answer but my personal experience says no. If that isn’t true the all the findings of the study are in question.

I do not have a problem with birth control and I don't have a problem providing birth control to women who cannot afford it but I do have problem using this study to support the argument that all women should receive no cost birth control regardless of their ability to pay. The study simply does not justify that conclusion and that isn’t about ideology it is about science and the problems we run into when people politicize it. .
