I think that, even though the iPad is a bit more expensive, as with any electronics purchase you shouldn't skimp on price if you're getting something for the extra cost. In this case, you get one of the most flawless experiences possible, with apps that are safe and work and can be used on up to 5 mobile devices.
I already have one iPad 2 (64 GB), and I know I'm getting my daughter one at least so that she stops stealing it to watch Amazon Prime cartoons we got her or playing game apps for little kids.
