The Fire is a decent piece of hardware and a decent price, but you're sacrificing control over what you can do.

If you are happy to grant Amazon control over what you can and can't install, then the Fire is a viable alternative. For me, that immediately eliminates it as a consideration for a general purpose tablet.


Is iPad a general purpose tablet? Also remember the original question - she wants a low maitenance, out of the box, easy to use, entertainment piece for older folks. Seriously, what do you think they will be installing?

With Amazon Prime, you get a MULTITUDE of TV shows and movies for free, and you can buy or rent whatever else you want. And pricewise, you can't argue with it.
