That sucks. I learned to drive in California. I'd bet at least 85% of drivers licensed in California don't even know motorcycles are allowed to split the lanes.
I had to look that up, actually (though I'm licensed in CT). I was so sure it was illegal but sure enough, in CA, it's perfectly fine. It seems extremely unsafe to me but hey, if it's legal, then that's cool.
for example, in texas it's not *technically* illegal because they do not have a law specifically forbidding the practice. in fact, many states do not specifically forbid the practice, it's just that most cops can and will give you a ticket for reckless driving or the equivalent thereof if they decide they don't like the way you drive.
