When talking about an accent, the actual language doesn't occur to me snoopcester Send a noteboard - 20/09/2012 12:13:20 AM
I'm not saying that people don't have accents that sound similar. The point is that without some of the embellishments there's really nothing "piratish" about it. Also, of course, plenty of pirates weren't from the West Country, like Captain Kidd, for example.

But the accents sound similar because the pirate accent is directly derived from the accents of the West Country... which is were the majority of England's ships sailed from and more sailors than anywhere other part of England came from. It really is a good bet that a pirate from Britain would have a West Country accent.

As for "arr" - "Ooh arr", sometimes shortened to "arr" is in common use in that part of the world as a way of signalling the affirmative. The use is exaggerated but very much accurate to the West Country.

Same for the use of "me" in "me matey" - "me" is used by those with the more "pure" West country accents in place of "my".

If someone speaks like a "pirate" according to the modern stereotype, then they're going to sound like a lot of English pirates would have sounded

Henning Mankell "We must defend the open society, because if we start locking our doors, if we let fear decide, the person who committed the act of terror will win"
