It also wasn't an Olympic sport until 1996 Larry Send a noteboard - 04/08/2012 03:58:00 AM
He had retired from the volleyball team eight years earlier, then won his beach gold aged 35 - if that's the only case of players who were top in both sports, I'm not sure it's a very convincing one.
You are very prejudiced :P

I guess I'll just have to live with that then. :P
I liked playing both as intermural rec sports my freshman year at UT. *shrug*

I'm sure beach volleyball can be fun to play, but that isn't exactly the criterium for making something an Olympic sport - it's the "fun to watch" criterium that's rather more decisive here, one suspects.

Yeah, the sex object angle makes it an easier ad-sell here, but it is a semi-popular, televised sport here with a professional league, so it does meet the criteria for inclusion in the Olympics (it is higher in visibility and non-elite athlete participation than say synchronized swimming/diving). And if you've ever played beach volleyball and were athletic enough to spike/block in regular volleyball, it quickly quickly apparent that it is damn difficult to jump 10+ feet into the air to do the same, what with all the sand and all.

I am still waiting for beach soccer to become an official Olympic sport, especially since it seems American football is still quite a bit aways from full membership (it is a World Games sport, I've learned).
