If you do use "He laid down on the bed" because it just sounds better to you than "He lay down on the bed", probably no one is going to notice or care, and if they do just claim that he was laying himself down and you just left the direct object as implied instead of spelling it out.

But you should still always use "was lying down" instead of "was laying down".
