Sometimes its bottomless, sometimes its filled with water, sometimes ghostly etheral stuff- and I have to cross it. Sometimes I can just step or jump across, other times I have have to go across a tight rope, or swing on a rope connected to the roof. there is never anything on the far side but I still have to get across regardless.
