but I think that unless we want to have no zoos, we have to look at the facts - the whole concept of a zoo is that an animal is being kept in a way/place that is different than what how/where it naturally should be. If someone isn't treating the animal in a bad way, it's not exactly fair to treat those people as if they were being excessively mean and/or stupid. I really do think that this whole concept underestimates the ability of animals to have fun exercising their playful/killer instincts as well. This case is not hurting the lion.
I can see the point here, and I appreciate it, but I still don't think this is harmful to the lion. If it were, the zoo should know well enough not to put that kind of glass viewing area up in the first place. There are going to be little "agitating chunks of food" walking past all day.
I agree with this completely; I don't think this animal was being mistreated.
Well, unless they change the way the viewing area is built, or have someone in there punishing/rewarding the lion, I have no idea how you would change this. ENT was right when he pointed out that the instinct is to be enticed by small creatures that look like food. I simply believe that's more fun for them than either of you two seem to think (unless, of course, the animal were being kept hungry on purpose to get him going).
I do think it's mean to intentionally tease a zoo animal like that. Yes, I'm sure no harm came of it and I'm not saying that the parents should be asked to leave the zoo. I do think it would have been right to ask them to move on. Most zoos have rules that you aren't allowed to agitate the animals and this lion is clearly agitated (even if it's just playful-type agitation).

The animals we see are gifts. We should treat them as such.

Additionally, it's probably not great to encourage such a dangerous animal that it's OKAY to behave in such a matter towards humans. It's a danger to the keepers, veterinarians and other staff that work behind the scenes every day. Those individuals know how to exercise caution and every measure is taken to keep even more than a good wall between human and beast...but you still don't want an animal learning it's okay to be aggressive (even playfully).
