Romney also has a reputation for being a relatively honest person with a true understanding of finance, business and economics. He has turned around numerous businesses that were in trouble and he cleaned up the Salt Lake City OIympics after the corruption that was exposed there. He has enough understanding of the issues to balance the budget and hopefully rein in the ballooning entitlement spending. It doesn't matter if he put in RomneyCare as long as he gets rid of ObamaCare.
Ultimately, the fact that he's "not Obama" and doesn't have excessive baggage (like Santorum's social positions) may be all he needs to win. Most independents realize that the Democrats have no political will to cut spending, particularly on the entitlement programs that will eventually bankrupt the nation. Furthermore, Obama does nothing but talk, and talk, and talk. The fact that since his ObamaCare debacle he hasn't gotten much passed doesn't make people feel more comfortable, though, because every time he opens his mouth he essentially says "more government regulation, more programs, more spending" and then we all hold our breath and wait to see if the terrible legislation actually makes it through Congress.

Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

The statement "anyone but Obama" can be a rallying cry, but only for the right candidates.
