The country was in much better shape then and the economy was performing very, very well.
Obviously, Iraq was turning into a mess, but still, at home, it was a party compared to today.

a weak, opposition party candidate who is already painted as a flip-flopper, from massachusetts, fabulously wealthy, who doesn't know the first thing about the average voter against a president roughly half the country is ambivalent about but not enough people outright hate. romney is too weak of a candidate to pull off a victory.
christie or daniels would have been a better candidate to actually stand up against him, but they both know they have a much better chance in 2016 when obama can't run again. it is VERY difficult to unseat an incumbent who hasn't run the country into the ground and/or who hasn't used up his political capital. bush 41 was the last one in recent memory, carter before that. both had situations where people were completely fed up with the way the country was being run, and both were defeated by STRONG candidates in the election.

It can definitely work.....don't compare 2012 to 2004.

The statement "anyone but Obama" can be a rallying cry, but only for the right candidates.
