If any attempt were made to move the holiday to May 1 it might just get abolished outright.
It's not as if anybody who isn't a socialist politician or union diehard cares about anything other than the day off here, either. Well, and having a good laugh at said socialist politicians being obligated to sing The Internationale in public.
But as Joel mentioned, it is rather ironic that both Labor Day (the real one) and the International Women's Day are inspired by American events, and timed to coincide with the day of said American events, yet the US adamantly refuses to recognize either.
So it's International Women's Day today.
