Time is on his side. Legolas Send a noteboard - 02/03/2012 11:57:02 PM
I think the issue for me is if he has actually changed minds or merely managed to promote a minority of people within the party who agree with him to high up with little impact on the attitude of the Tory party and supporters as a whole, I suspect it is the latter. I think Cameron does believe in what he is doing... I'm not sure it goes much deeper in the Tory party than that though - time will tell if it holds once he is out of office.

Look at Spain - the conservatives got back in power there, but they're not stupid enough to waste their political capital on trying to dial back the gay marriage the socialists introduced. The same would be true in the UK, and a fortiori if the Conservative Party is the one to introduce gay marriage in the first place. But in general, too - gay rights are far more widely accepted among the young, even in more conservative places like the US. I don't see Cameron losing his grip anytime soon, and if at some point in the future the Conservative Party is dominated by people further to the right again, time will have moved against them and further eroded their support on that kind of issue. Besides, I'm not sure the Tories stand much of a chance of forming a government if their leaders are much further right than Cameron's crew is - he got the win by safely staying in the centre.
