Yeah, but they were not being paid by their (probably far less numerous) viewers. Joel Send a noteboard - 20/02/2012 08:26:16 PM
The actors of Friends were making 1 million per episode in season 9 and 10. Actors in other similar "hot" shows, make similar amounts. Same logic to hot movie shows.

Why shouldn't a webcomic which can create similar joy, albeit in a different format, also raise similar amounts of money. Need I point out that with many of these pledges you are also receiving product for the services (this is not pure profit for the author of Order of the Stick). For example you can get 8x10 posters of the entire cast of Order of the Stick for $25, or for a little more you can get 1 of the 7 Order of the Stick graphic novels that Rich Burlew has published over the years. Donate about $300 and you get all 7 of the graphic novels.

--------

You also need to pick a different country than Japan which has the third highest gdp in the world, is in the top 25 for gdp per capita, and has a lower poverty rate than the US.

They had access to NBCs deep pockets, amply filled by many corporate advertisers. Rich Burlew has the people who visit his site and actually notice he is doing a fundraiser rather than immediately clicking to the newest comic (like I did,) and their resources are somewhat less than, say, Sony or Old Navy. Really, if raising that much money that way that fast was unremarkable we would not be talking about records (and, yes, I realize it is for the comic category alone, but that illustrates my point: For a one month webcomic fundraiser this is unprecedented.)

Think of it this way: With the help of his show AND Jon Stewarts, Stephen Colberts super PAC raised $1.02 million between the end of September and the end of January. Order of the Stick has raised $1.09 million in one-fourth that time. Even with tangible incentives that is pretty amazing.

The comment about Japan was just a casual Weird Al reference (specifically, to "Eat It") because, like I say, I am not making the "how could people spend so much money so frivolously when the world has such widespread dire needs?111" argument.
