Police should be the ones with cameras on them, that they cannot tamper with, remove, edit, etc. Then if there are any claims of issues during the arrest, complaints, etc, all they have to do is check through the records and see what really happened. No editing, no propaganda, just the truth. Or as close to it as anyone's likely to come.

That said, while you raise some good points and people do abuse the power to video tape the police (just like they can abuse the power to video tape anyone), forbidding all video taping and recording of any sort is another sort of abuse. You can't justify one abuse because other potential abuses could have happened.

They put cameras on police cruisers to protect cops from claims of abuse, but gave cops the ability to turn them off at will. The pathetic thing is how many cops forgot to do so before committing some rather stunning crimes.
