People who follow a strict code of conducts don't have unions that keep them from being fired even when they grossly fail at their job. What exactly it means to be professional make be in question but I think a high level of personal accountably has to be at its core. A captain o ship has a huge amount of power but the price he pays for that is if the ship runs aground it is his fault even if he did everything right. That is personal accountability.
